The End of the Tax Disc

If you’ve ever stood in a post office queue waiting to renew your car tax or worst still, forgot to actually renew it only for someone to point it out to you, the latest Government news will be music to your ears.

That news being that from 1st October 2014, you will no longer need to display the paper tax disc on your vehicles windscreen. In fact, from that date, paper tax disc will no longer even be issued (customers with a Northern Ireland address will still need to display their MoT disc).

You will of course still need to tax your vehicle to drive it or keep it on the road and the DVLA will be sending us renewal reminders for when your vehicle taxes are due to expire. The new tax system will also affect the buying and selling of a vehicle after 1 October 2014.

The tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle and the new owner will need to get new tax before the vehicle can be used. The seller will automatically get a refund for any full calendar months left on the vehicle tax after the DVLA is notified of the sale. Tax can still be bought in the usual ways; online, by phone or at a Post Office® branch and the option to pay by direct debit will also be introduced.
